Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between copyediting and proofreading?
Copyediting is for manuscripts that are structurally settled but need a professional polish for correctness, clarity, and consistency. Proofreading is the final quality check once revisions are complete and the manuscript has already been copyedited (or is very clean).
How do I know which service I need?
Start with the free micro-sample (up to 1,000 words). I’ll tell you whether copyediting or proofreading is the best fit and confirm your rate + timeline.
What is the free micro-sample, exactly?
A short edit (up to ~1,000 words) that lets you see my approach and helps me confirm a recommended service level (copyediting vs proofreading), final rate, and turnaround. It’s a fit check, not a comprehensive edit of the excerpt.
What’s the “First 10K Manuscript Checkup”?
A copyediting-focused diagnostic of your first 10,000 words, plus a “Readiness & Next Steps” summary and a recommendation for the best service + timing. It also confirms your final rate and timeline for a full-manuscript edit. If you book a full-manuscript edit within 14 days, the full $450 is applied toward your project.
What are your rates and minimum fees?
Copyediting: from $0.04/word (minimum $500)
Proofreading: from $0.03/word (minimum $250)
Final rate is confirmed after the micro-sample or Checkup.
What are typical turnaround times?
For 70–100k words (quoted proportionally for other lengths):
Proofreading: ~3–4 weeks
Copyediting: ~5–7 weeks
Final timeline is confirmed after the micro-sample or Checkup and depends on complexity and calendar availability.
Do you offer rush editing?
Sometimes. Rush timelines require schedule compression and may include fees:
+25% for moderately compressed deadlines
+50% for very tight deadlines (same-week delivery or substantial compression)
If I can’t accommodate rush, I’ll offer the next available start date.
